Texas Gas Well Explodes

Occasionally, it turns out that severe thunderstorms and natural gas wells don't make for a good combination. Case in point: on Thursday night, a gas well exploded in a fireball due to a lightning strike at a Vantage Energy site in Denton, Texas. According to the CBS-TV affiliate in Dallas, the accident happened at about 10 p.m. local time on Thursday. The drilling site had been shut down, the station reports, "due to low production."
A second gas well next to the explosion site was producing natural gas, but Vantage Energy workers and Denton Fire Department personnel were able to prevent the fire from spreading. The gas well fire burned until 2:30 a.m. local time, the station reports.
Luckily, no injuries were reported.
