USA: Police flood Oakland's streets, make arrests at police brutality demo

Dozens of protesters were detained by police in Oakland on Saturday evening and into Sunday morning after demonstrators took to the streets to rail against police brutality, and a new protest policy implemented by the city's mayor, Libby Schaaf. Mobile phone footage shows some of the 100 or so protesters that had gathered trying to evade police, officers pursuing them and making several arrests. Other protesters could be heard shouting at police, suggesting that their job was to 'de-escalate' the situation, rather than inflame it, as well as shouting 'let them [the detained attendees] go.' The new policy states that police can clear the streets of demonstrators and move them to the pavement if they are rallying at night. Schaaf implemented the bill after several businesses were damaged at an anti-police brutality protest in Oakland on May Day. The Mayor believes the new policy to be necessary for preventing property damage and violence. An officer could be heard using a megaphone to explain that if protesters stayed on the streets and did not move to the 'side-walk' they would be breaking the new law. There were no injuries or instances of vandalism or property damage reported.
