German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that she was sceptical a that a no-fly zone could currently be enforced in Syria during a press conference with Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in Berlin, Tuesday.
Her announcement comes after German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier called for a week long no-fly zone following an attack on a convoy carrying aid near Aleppo on Sept. 19. Speaking briefly on the Middle Eastern crisis, Merkel made the assertion that it was up to the Syrian government and Russia to increase the chances of a ceasefire in Syria.
Moving on to the refugee crisis, when asked if she regretted her so-called open-door immigration policy, Merkel said, "Our value system states that we have religious freedom, which means that we don't differentiate between Christian and Muslim people and we don't say that one gets protection here and the others don't. And I think this should be visible in the politics of every European state. That is my opinion now, as it was before."
Commenting upon the Malaysian flight MH17 that was downed over Ukraine, the Malaysian Prime Minister Najib stressed the country's commitment to finding the people responsible, stressing that investigations would continue.
Najib will spend three days in Berlin, on his first official visit since 2009.
