Thousands of people flocked to a Mahua tree in Madhya Pradesh's Nayagaon, in a frenzy over rumours of its "miraculous healing powers."
Footage filmed on Monday shows locals struck by illnesses visiting the site, with hope of getting cure with the healing touch of the tree. Some are reportedly brought to the site, hooked to oxygen and Intravenous Therapy (IV) drips, while others rely on canes and wheelchairs to reach the site.
Some 25,000 to 30,000 people reportedly visit the tree every day.
The pilgrimage to the Mahua tree was allegedly sparked by a rumour started by a local farmer, who claimed that the tree offered what he believed to be a "magic cure."
One local resident said that it was "a miracle tree," adding that "we are feeling much better after we touched the tree."
Another resident noted that "after visiting this site, I am slowly getting better and feeling more confident and energised."
Some miracle-seekers were also seen buying photographs of the "magical" tree, which are sold in the area. Incense, coconuts, mineral water and snacks are also available at the site, which has reportedly littered the area.
According to forest officials, wildlife in the area may be under threat as the site is becoming a scene of chaos.
