The way in which Russian football fans were handled by French police during an incident at the Euros in Marseille was "absolutely unacceptable", said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during a meeting in State Duma in Moscow, Wednesday.
Lavrov pointed out that French authorities "should have immediately contacted the embassy or General Consulate in Marseille" before detaining 43 Russia fans after clashes with England supporters on Saturday. He said that such action went against all Vienna conventions and told the deputies that he has warned the French foreign minister "not to tolerate these kind of violations".
According to Lavrov, Russian authorities only learned about the detention from social media after fans contacted the consulate online, only then were Russian diplomats sent to the scene where they were able to diffuse the situation.
Lavrov also commented on the exclusion of Russia Today channel from national TV in Argentinia. He explained that Argentinian authorities had contacted the Russian Foreign Ministry prior to the move, and had asked for it to not be perceived "as something against Russia as it has been already decided". From his point of view, he said that it "would not be perceived as a friendly move that goes along with the strategic partnership between Russia and Argentina".
Towards the end of his speech, Lavrov made a statement regarding the lifting of sanctions and stressed that Russia "is not taking any initiative on this issue and we are not going to take any".
