Christmas lights were switched on in Damascus' Christian neighborhood again after years of civil war, upheaval and bloodshed, as shown in footage filmed in the Syrian capital on Monday.
"The situation was rather frightening last year, it was raining mortars and fear, people even did not know where were they would die. It's the opposite this year and it is much better. Everyone is happy and you can see that on their faces," said resident Ghosoon Al-Bakr.
Families took pictures in front of the Christmas trees adorning the neighbourhood, while many attended religious services in the local churches and filled the streets for a last-minute shopping.
Syria's Christian community makes up around 10 percent of the country's population.
