The gruesome act of a single person cannot discredit all refugees, said German government spokesperson Steffen Seibert, regarding the teenage refugee, who attacked four passengers on a train in Wurzberg. Seibert was holding a press conference in Berlin, Wednesday.
"The Wurzberg perpetrator was confirmed to be a refugee. I want to remind you what Minister Altmaier said yesterday: the gruesome act of a single person cannot discredit a large group of people," Seibert said.
He added, that the recent terror attacks in Paris, Brussels and Nice are "not the same picture," before adding that "in most cases the perpetrators were not refugees. Some of them were born here in Europe. Some of them have already been here for a long time."
Moreover, on behalf of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the whole government, Seibert expressed his deepest condolences to the relatives of the Hong Kong family as well as the German citizens injured in the attack. "Our thoughts with them and we wish them speedy recovery both physical and mental," he added.
A teenage refugee from Ochsenfurt, armed with an axe and knife, injured four on a train close to Wurzburg in southern Germany on Monday. He fled the scene but was chased, before being shot dead by police. Three people were severely injured in the attack, despite first reports indicating a higher number. German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere stated that the refugee declared himself to be a member of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in a YouTube video.
