27.05.2016
Exclusive RT footage released on Thursday shows the Iraqi Army and supporting militias bombarding positions of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in Fallujah, as part of a continued effort to dispel the militant group from the strategic city.
Currently Iraqi forces are liberating several key strategic settlements on the outskirts of the city, including the town of Karma which sits just 16 kilometres (9.9 miles) northeast of Fallujah.
Fallujah is located 65 kilometres (40 miles) west of Baghdad and was seized by IS militants in early 2014 ahead of the group's major offensive in Iraq. Previous attempts to liberate the city have failed however the Iraqi Army's current offensive, which includes an estimated 5,000 troops and is backed by air support from the US-led coalition, has gained significant ground in the last week.
