The BRICS leaders from Russia, India, China, South Africa and Brazil exchanged views on a range of key regional and international affairs including economic cooperation and the fight against militants in the plenary session of the BRICS Summit in Goa on Sunday.
Russian President Vladimir Putin stated, "The countries of the five [BRICS nations] adhere to similar positions on topical global and regional issues, stand for decisive actions on combating against terrorism, joint counteraction to other challenges and threats of our time."
Putin continued, "We are convinced that the settlement of international conflicts should be implemented by political and diplomatic means and we do not accept the policy of military pressure in any form and the infringement of sovereignty of other states."
Focusing on economic growth South African President Jacob Zuma said that BRICS countries must "expand investment in developing small micro and medium sized enterprises" revealing his government had agreed to "create a million youth internships" to be launched in 2017.
The plenary session took place on the sidelines of the Summit. In the afternoon leaders of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), uniting Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bhutan and Nepal, will join presidents Vladimir Putin, Xi Jinping, Michel Temer and Jacob Zuma for a joint BRICS - BIMSTEC Outreach Summit.
