Former Afghan Prime Minister and Hezb-i-Islami leader, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, called for "peace and brotherhood" in his first public appearance in 20 years in Mitarlam, Laghman province, on Saturday.
He continued, "Afghanistan especially in the current situation needs a strong centralised government. We are ready inside and outside the government to work together to form a strong government which will dominate and will be elected by a majority of people. I will support it without any privilege or condition."
At least 200 people attended a public gathering to listen to the former militant leader, who was designated as a "terrorist" by the United States Department of State in 2003. In February this year, the United Nations Security Council agreed to drop sanctions against Hekmatyar, paving the way for his return to Afghanistan.
