Prayers and memorial services were held in the city of Nieuwegein on Friday, marking one year since the MH17 tragedy, with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte among many speakers to pay homage to those who died in the tragedy on July 17, 2014. Around 1,500 people attended the ceremony organised by the local council to commemorate those who died, many of the Dutch nationals. Participants played songs, read poems, and delivered personal messages about their loved ones who lost their lives last year. Memorial ceremonies are also being held in Ukraine, as well as in Australia, the country with the third largest numbers of nationals aboard the downed plane after the Netherlands and Malaysia. A monument in memory of the crash victims was unveiled in Grabovo in Ukraine's Donetsk region earlier in the day, the nearest village to the crash site, along with a photo exhibition of the crash scene. A total of 298 people, 196 of them Dutch citizens, died a year ago when the Malaysian Airlines flight came down in the Donetsk Region. The circumstances of the crash are still being investigated.
