Thousands of people gathered near the Memorial to the Heroic Defence of Sevastopol for a ceremony dedicated to the 74th anniversary of the start of the Great Patriotic War (World War II on the Eastern Front), in Sevastopol early Monday morning. Participants of the event honoured the memory of the victims by holding a march to the memorial site that was followed by a minute's silence and the lighting of candles. They also floated paper boats out into the sea in memory of the soldiers who fell in 1941. Nazi Germany launched Operation Barbarossa against the Soviet Union at dawn on June 22, initially inflicting heavy losses on Soviet forces before stalling on the outskirts of Moscow.
