Russia: Putin praises success of Russia's sports programme

Russian President Vladimir Putin demanded an end to huge sums being paid to buy foreign sports stars while chairing a government session on the development of sports in Russia held in Moscow, Tuesday. The Russian leader slammed the practice that sees non-Russians brought into the country for “ungrounded prices” instead of investing in home grown talent. He also criticised the growing number of Russian sportspeople testing positive for performance enhancing drugs, calling for preventative efforts to stop people taking such a route. The president went on to remark that encouraging Russians to get involved in sport was paying off as seen by Russia’s victories at the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan, the 2013 IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Moscow, and at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.
