Clashes erupted in Hong Kong's Mong Kok district, Monday and Tuesday, during a police operation to clear unlicensed food vendors.
Protesters threw solid objects at riot police who in turn used pepper spray and reportedly fired warning shots to disperse the crowds.
A total of 23 people were arrested and 48 police officers injured; with the number of protester and civilian casualties unknown.
The unrest broke out as government officials attempted to remove hawkers from a major junction in the Mong Kok district. Hundreds of people had gathered ahead of the clearance to prevent the police from carrying out the operation.
