We develop a free software community because we work with Linux and we contribute to the circular economy because we use a SBC Single Board Computer or single computer boards so that, for example, if there is an upgrade of those boards, you simply change them to a new one, but the structure of the Wawalaptop stays the same for 10 to 15 years and that is how we contribute to the circular economy."

A family of Peruvian entrepreneurs have developed a laptop made of recycled, pressed wood which can be powered with a solar charger. The low-cost and durable device is aimed at improving the connectivity of some of Peru’s less well-off inhabitants and at boosting the educational chances of students in more remote areas of the country.
Alejandra Carrasco, the CEO of WAWALAPTOP, showed off her company’s product in Lima on Wednesday where she explained the thinking behind the computer.
"I feel that WAWALAPTOP firstly, creates community, and number two, democratises the access of Peruvian students,” she stated.
"The reality is that many people [in Peru] do not take part in this globalized world and aren't actually connected to the world and do not have access to technology, even a desktop computer, so that is where we decided to use technology to create new educational tools," she added.
With this simple, wooden laptop the company wants to contribute to the circular economy, making it easy to change broken parts such as the device’s single-board computer. The frame itself is designed to last for up to 10-15 years with a little bit of care.
The small laptop is reportedly sold for 799 Peruvian soles ($235; €215).
