Austria: Farmers demand EU action over milk prices

Hundreds of Austrian dairy farmers gathered outside the EU office in Vienna, Thursday, to protest low milk prices. The angry protesters dumped milk powder and created a milk lake in front of the office to illustrate the over-production in the dairy sector.
"Of course we have a common agricultural policy in Europe. And that is the crux of the matter. In Brussels there are decisions taken, and they are then valid for the whole of Europe," said protester Ewald Grunzweil.
"And wrong decisions have been taken there, which should have been cancelled. This means we again need a system for managing milk production levels," he added.
Farmers have staged protests across the globe at the plunging cost of milk, which is partly being blamed on Russian sanctions. Estimates say the price for dairy products has fallen by about 40 percent in the last 18 months.
