Crowds of shoppers could catch a glimpse of the former Cuban President Fidel Castro next to US President-elect Donald Trump at Napolitan artist Genny Di Virgilio's shop in Naples, Sunday, as the artist displayed figurines of various famous individuals.
Other figurines on display included, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, UK artist Freddie Mercury, former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Pope Francis, among many others.
Virgilio made the figurine out of clay to pay tribute to the former revolutionary Cuban leader after he passed away on Friday night. Castro can be seen wearing his iconic uniform and is standing next to the words "Hasta la victoria siempre" (Until victory always), but the figurine is missing his iconic cigar. The Castro figurine stands right next to one of US-President elect Donald Trump, who recently referred to the Cuban leader as a "brutal dictator."
A key member of the Cuban Revolution, Castro and his allies ousted the authoritarian government of Cuban President Fulgencio Batista in 1959, before going on to found the Cuban socialist state. He served as Prime Minister from 1959 to 1976, and then as President from 1976 to 2008, surviving a turbulent century, geopolitical tensions, the Bay of Pigs invasion and at least 638 US assassination attempts. In 2008, he handed the reins of power to his younger brother Raul and slowly withdrew from the frontline of Cuban politics.
