Thousands of supporters of Catalan independence protester outside Catalonia's Economic Council headquarters in Barcelona on Friday to call for the release of politicians Jordi Cuixart and Jordi Sanchez.
The demonstration commemorated the events of two years ago, when in the same spot authorities ordered the arrest of 15 Catalan government officials and activists for organising an independence referendum.
Cuixart led Omnium Cultural, a group promoting Catalan culture and language, while Sanchez was president of the Catalan National Assembly (ANC). Both were later imprisoned on charges of sedition and rebellion.
A letter from Cuixart was out at the protest. In it, he accused the government of "criminalising the peaceful demonstration of September 20, 2017".
