Police officers vacated their positions outside the Ecuadorian embassy in London, Monday, where they had been stationed for several years as part of round-the-clock surveillance intended to capture Julian Assange. The WikiLeaks founder has lived in the embassy since June 2012 when he was granted diplomatic asylum by Ecuador. The 42-year-old fears extradition to Sweden by the British government under an outstanding European Arrest Warrant that relates to an alleged sexual assault in Stockholm in 2010. Assange says he is willing to face questioning in relation to the incident in the UK, but refuses to travel to Sweden as it has declined to guarantee that he would not be extradited to the US to face espionage charges. While Scotland Yard has called off the multi-million-pound surveillance operation, police confirmed in a statement that they still intend to pursue the arrest of Assange.
