Veterans, locals and activists lit candles at a memorial ceremony in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol on Friday to commemorate those who died during World War II for the International Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation. People gathered by a monument dedicated to the victims of political repression, the famine that hit Ukraine between 1932-33, and those who died at the hands of the Nazis. According to the city's mayor, Yuri Hotlubeya, the event was organised for veterans to honour the memory of their comrades who died defending their homeland. The event was largely limited to those, particularly veterans, with a direct connection with the war due political tensions in the east of the country.
