An estimated 100,000 anti-austerity protesters gathered outside Brussels Nord train station, Wednesday, decrying measures and welfare cutbacks recently introduced by the government. The demonstration was organised by Belgium’s three largest unions, who spoke out against austerity, slamming Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel for what the protesters consider anti-worker, pro-business policies. The unions are set to hold a train strike, Friday, with disruptions to Eurostar and Thalys rail services expected. Police went on to deploy water cannon against the anti-austerity protesters, who responded by throwing rocks, with some participants creating make-shift fires.
