Several protesters burned a US flag during a mass torch-lit demonstration in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa, Friday, participants were rallying against alleged government corruption and collusion with the US. The march comes after growing unrest in the country following the release of documents last month allegedly proving that the former director and top officials of the Honduran Institute of Social Security (IHSS) embezzled some $200 million (€177,600,000) by syphoning the money off to phantom companies. Some of the money allegedly went to the ruling National Party, led by Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez. Anti-US sentiment has also shot up over the last months, as the Obama administration called for Congress to provide $1 billion (€888,000,000) in aid to Honduras, as well as El Salvador and Guatemala, causing scepticism over where the money will go. Similar protests are currently occurring in Guatemala.
