London Mayor Sadiq Khan joined thousands of Muslims and non-Muslims alike for Eid celebrations in Trafalgar Square, Saturday, to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
Khan was keen to promote a message of unity in the wake of increased incidents of racial crimes and hate crimes since the country's 'Brexit' referendum, which saw the UK electorate vote to withdraw from the European Union.
In his public speech, Khan addressed thousands of attendees to say, "We've seen a rise in racial incidents. We've seen people try to divide our communities. We've seen people try and sew the divisions of hate. And my message to them is, 'You will not divide us'. My message to them is, 'We are stronger together'."
Once off the main stage, London's mayor re-emphasised the point, saying, "There's been increase in racial incidents and racial crimes. My message to those who try and divide us is, 'You won't succeed'. My message from the commissioner, from my Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime Sophie Linden and myself is that there is zero tolerance towards hate crime."
The Holy Month of Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and lasts 29-30 days. Muslims observe it as a time of fasting during the day, and it is regarded as one of the five pillars of Islam.
