SpaceX founder and chief designer Elon Musk presented Interplanetary Transport System (ITS), his plan on how to send humans to Mars, during a presentation at 67th International Astronautical Congress in Guadalajara, Tuesday.
Musk showed CAD models of the spaceship-rocket hybrid and explained that the images are "not an artistic impression" but the real prototype. He told that the ITS is supposed to be able to carry up to 100 people to Mars per flight, with the journey taking 80 days. The first flights are targeted to take place by the mid-2020s.
The SpaceX founder estimates that in 40-100 years it would be possible to establish an independent colony on the Red Planet. Musk assessed that if 1 million people signed up for the flights, the tickets to Mars could be sold for around $200,000 (€178,483).
