The Hungarian parliament has passed coronavirus legislation that enables Prime Minister Viktor Orban to rule by decree, in Budapest on Monday.
The parliament, with two-thirds of the seats belonging to Orban's party, passed the laws with 137 votes in favour and 53 against the new measures, which enable the government to imprison people for up to five years for spreading misinformation that hinders the government's management of the pandemic. The laws also enable Orban to declare a state of emergency without a specific timeframe.
Hungary has 447 confirmed cases of coronavirus and is currently under partial lockdown as people are asked to limit their outdoor activities to essential errands, while several schools, restaurants and shops are closed.
