SOT, Richard Ferrard, President of the French National Assembly (French): "The session of questions to the government is over. We will proceed to the vote by public ballot on the law proposal on the ratification of CETA [Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement]. Please return to your seats. Wait, we will wait. The National Assembly adopted the law proposal. The meeting is adjourned."
The French National Assembly voted in favour of the ratification of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) in Paris, Tuesday, with 266 members voting for the EU-Canada free-trade deal and 213 voting against.
The announcement of the result was welcomed with applauds and booing in the National Assembly.
The legislation will go through the Senate before being signed as law by French President Emmanuel Macron.
The CETA has been provisionally applied between Canada and the EU since September 2017 and needs the approval of each member state to become permanent.
