A protester was killed during a trucker strike in the Colombian province of Boyaca, Tuesday, with participants burning dozens of truck on a motorway near the town of Paipa.
The demonstrator, believed to be 27-year-old Luis Orlando Saenz, was reportedly killed by Colombia's Mobile Anti-Disturbances Squadron (ESMAD) between the provincial capital of Tunja and Duitama on Route 55. The Colombian riot control unit has since stated that they shot at the man while he was allegedly handling explosives. Twelve other protesters were injured and taken to hospital.
During the action, regional president Carlos Andres Amaya was injured in a car accident at one of the strikers' road blocks, whilst on the way to negotiate with participants. His motorcade reportedly collided with one of the road blocks erected by the protesters near Duitama.
Trucker strikes have dogged Colombia since June 7, with the Colombian Truckers Association (ACC) calling for an increase in cargo prices and fuel price cuts among other requests.
