Hundreds of New Yorkers took to the streets on Friday as the protests against racism and police brutality entered the second week following the killing of George Floyd.
The protesters marched across the city chanting 'Black lives matter' and other slogans as they approached the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn which became a scene of another violent death.
A prisoner, 35-year-old Jamel Floyd died of a heart attack after the jail officers diffused a pepper spray in his face on Wednesday. Floyd's mother said the MDC officers were aware that the inmate suffered from asthma and diabetes. Both parents of the victim made an appearance at the demonstration in front of the jail premises.
Protests sparked by George Floyd's death at the hands of police in Minneapolis have been taking place since May 26 in the US and around the world.
George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, was killed during an arrest in Minneapolis on Monday, May 25, after officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes despite Floyd saying he couldn't breathe.
