10.05.2016
President of the Brazilian Federal Senate Renan Calheiros denied a motion by Brazil's new speaker of the Lower House Waldir Maranhao, in Brasilia, Monday, to annul the impeachment process of Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff and to return the process to the lower house.
During the plenary session, Calheiros said "No monocratic decision can be more important than a decision made by the collegiate. Based one everything said, I deny the request from the Lower House of Congress," in a reference to the motion proposed by the speaker of Brazil's lower house, Waldir Maranhao, to annul the impeachment vote against Rousseff, and return the process to the Lower House
Discussing the point further, Calheiros stated that "To accept this joke with democracy would mean a set back. It's not the job of the president of the senate to say if the process is fair or unfair, but its the work of the plenary, of the whole group of the senators."
The Senate is scheduled to vote on May 11 on whether to start an impeachment trial against Rousseff.
