The humanitarian situation is dramatically getting worse and therefore the Federal Chancellor (Angela Merkel) called upon Turkey to end its military operations and return to the negotiating table.''

Again today, we have addressed this in the security council of the United Nations. The measures that the EU decided upon on Monday are one step in a range of steps that we have taken. The Foreign Minister also said that we have further measures reserved.''

The weekly press conference of the German Government in Berlin was stormed by protesters on Wednesday. The group were demonstrating against Turkey's intervention against Kurds in North-East Syria.
Protesters entered with banners declaring support for the region of Rojava, the Kurdish name for the area of Syria in which Turkey began a military offensive on October 9, dubbed 'Operation Peace Spring'. The operation has the aim of creating a 'safe zone' in northern Syria cleared of Kurdish forces.
When asked about the governemnt's position on the situation, Christopher Burger, Spokesperson for the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that 'We [Germany] and other EU countries have emphatically requested that Turkey stops this military operation'. He said that the Government is 'worried about a destabilising effect', before adding, 'we have also said that we are worried that the success in the fight against the terror organisation IS will be endangered and we have said that, in our opinion, the security interests in Turkey must be pursued in another way.'
Burger noted that '[The German Government] have taken a range of measures in reaction to Turkey's military intervention, which we deem to be wrong.'
Also discussed was the current situation in Catalonia, where protests erupted this week after the sentencing of pro-independence Catalonian leaders.
