Russian President Vladimir Putin watched on as a rocket was successfully launched from the Vostochny Cosmodrome for the first time on Thursday, after a 24-hour delay. The Russian Soyuz-2.1a rocket will put three satellites into orbit, the Aist-2D, the SamSat-218 and the Lomonosov after they detached from the rocket around eight minutes and 44 seconds into the flight.
Speaking after the launch, Putin praised cosmodrome employees following the success saying, "You have done everything that should have been done from your part at a high level."
The Russian leader went on using the 'proof is in the pudding' idiom. "They say that one needs to eat a pudding to prove its quality. And to prove the readiness of the cosmodrome one needs to conduct the first launch. And you did it. Congratulations!" he said.
He also asked staff to look ahead to the future, reminding them of the plans to build a new infrastructure for heavy rockets. "The constructors have a lot of work ahead. The first stage is over, but it is only the first step," he said.
Putin arrived at the Vostochny spaceport on Wednesday but the launch was cancelled almost two minutes before the lift-off due to automatic control system failure.
