W/S NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and German Defense Minister and CDU Leader Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer arriving, Hamburg
SOT, Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General: "We see questions being asked about the strength of the transatlantic bond - the bond between North America and Europe. We see that on both sides of the Atlantic. But at the same time, we see that North America and Europe are doing more together than we have for many, many years. The United States is not leaving Europe - actually, the United States is increasing their presence in Europe with more troops, more forces, more exercises. And European allies are stepping up, increasing readiness of their forces, and investing more in their shared security. So for me this is a great opportunity to meet with the CDU to discuss everything from Iraq, collective defence, emerging security challenges and make sure that we continue to strengthen our transatlantic alliance. Thank you very much."
SOT, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, German Defense Minister and CDU Leader (German): "We want both sides of the transatlantic relationship to be highlighted. From our side, that's a very important point especially in times when German politics is critically at odds with the United States. The transatlantic relationship is very important not just for us, but also for NATO. That's why I am delighted that we have a clear commitment laid out by the NATO in having the Secretary-General here for a visit. Many thanks."
