Turkey: Mosul and Aleppo belong to Turks - Erdogan

Speaking during an opening ceremony for an educational institution in Bursa on Saturday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan compared the way that Syrians and Iraqis have been driven away from homes because of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; ISIS/ISIL), to how Turkish people were once forced out from the same cities.
“The places like Aleppo which belonged to us in the past have been demolished. Ancient cities of the Islamic civilisation have been destroyed,” Erdogan said and continued “In the same way, the ancient cities of Iraq, Kirkuk which belonged to us, Mosul which belonged to us.”
Erdogan stated that the Iraqi government is against the Turkish military taking part in the Mosul offensive “because I have mentioned the national pact. Why are you being bothered, I am teaching history here," he said.
According to Turkey's National Pact, dating back to the Turkish War of Independence 1919-1923, the Mosul Vilayet, an administrative division within the Ottoman Empire, belongs to Turkey. The territorial dispute was put to rest in 1926 when Turkey signed the Frontier Treaty with the Iraqi government but claims over the former Ottoman province seem to be remerging.
