Professor Says African Americans Must Stop Playing the Victim

A Duke University professor facing criticism for comments about African Americans has defended himself and attacked one of his colleagues for issuing a statement that “hurts Duke more than me” because “it only helps me spread my ideas and maybe get more book contracts”. In an email Monday to the Associated Press, Jerry Hough said it was difficult to be subtle in a post on a newspaper’s comments section with a limited word count. His original comments had been posted on the New York Times website. Hough said African Americans were to blame for their isolation, due to their choosing unusual names for their children and their relative lack of interracial relationships. In a statement, Duke University’s vice-president for public affairs and government affairs, Michael Schoenfeld, described the comments as offensive.
