Ada Colau, co-founder of anti-eviction group Mortgage Victims' Platform (PAH) was sworn in as the new mayor of Barcelona at the city hall on Saturday, becoming Barcelona's first female mayor. She pledged to "respect the law, keep loyalty to the King, respect the Constitution, the Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia, and the Municipal Charter of Barcelona," during her tenure as mayor. Her list of candidates won 11 of 41 available seats in the May 24 local elections that saw Spain's ruling People's Party suffer heavy losses. Her seat was secured when the left-wing Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC) and the Socialists' Party of Catalonia (PSC-PSOE) who had secured, five and four seats respectively, offered to back her. Previous Barcelona Mayor Xavier Trias won ten seats.
