Nicaragua: Ortega slams Trump on 36th anniversary of Sandinista Revolution

Thousands gathered in central Managua, Sunday, to mark the 36th anniversary of the revolution that ousted the Somoza dictatorship. Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega spoke at the event offering his support to Mexico and calling for better treatment of black people while condemning racism in an apparent reference to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's recent comments made describing Mexican migrants in the US as 'rapists' and 'killers'. Attendees can be seen waving Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), Venezuelan and Nicaraguan flags. Delegations from Venezuela, El Salvador and Honduras were present including former President of Honduras Manuel Zelaya. On July 19, 1979, the FSLN and its troops entered the country's capital city and declared that they now had control of government. Former President Anastasio Somoza Debayle had tendered his resignation two days earlier, signalling an end to the violent, autocratic rule under the Somoza family. It is estimated that between 1978 and 1979 more than 10,000 people lost their lives in the battle for power.
