Former Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra arrived at Thailand's Supreme Court to face charges of negligence, in Bangkok on Tuesday. She was greeted by a group of supporters who chanted "Yingluck, fight, fight," despite a ban on political gatherings by Thailand's military rulers. Shinawatra, who pleaded not guilty at Tuesday's hearing, could face a 10-year jail sentence if convicted. The charges relate to alleged dereliction of duty over her role in a rice subsidy programme, wherein rice farmers were purportedly paid twice the market rate for their crops by Shinawatra's government. The former prime minister has vowed to fight the charges, and has defended the policy saying it was aimed at alleviating poverty in the countryside. Shinawatra was ousted in March 2014 after Thailand's constitutional court found her guilty of abuse of power. Later that month the Thai military seized power. The next hearing in the trial has been scheduled for July 21.
