Thousands of Iranians took to the streets of Tehran, Friday, to protest a statement from Saudi Arabia's top religious authority saying that Iranians were not Muslims.
Saudi Arabia's Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdulaziz Al al-Sheikh made the statement after Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei hit out at Saudi Arabia for poorly managing the hajj pilgrimage last year, when thousands were killed in Mecca during a stampede.
Grand Mufti Abdulaziz al-Sheikh original statement reads: “We must understand these are not Muslims, they are children of Magi and their hostility towards Muslims is an old one. Especially with the people of Sunna.”
The Grand Mufti’s accusation came in response to Supreme Leader of Iran Sayyed Ali Hosseini Khamenei laying the blame for the 2,426 deaths that occurred during a stampede in Mecca’s Mina neighbourhood during last year squarely at the Saudi authorities’ door.
Iran has since stopped its pilgrims from attending this year’s hajj for the first time in nearly 30 years.
