Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Emperor Akihito, and his wife Empress Michiko were among the thousands of officials to honour the victims of World War II during a ceremony marking the 72nd anniversary of the end of international conflict in Tokyo, Tuesday.
Abe, together with Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, paid their respects at the memorial at the Nippon Budokan indoor arena, observing a moment of silence to honour those who had died.
Emperor Akihito said during the ceremony that "Our country today enjoys peace and prosperity, thanks to the ceaseless effort made by the people of Japan, but when I look back on the sufferings and tribulations of the past, I cannot help but be overcome with deep emotion."
Abe abstained from directly apologising for the causualties caused by Japan's role in the WWII.
