USA: Native Americans rally against Dakota pipeline
1
10.09.2016
Around 300 Native Americans from Standing Rock Sioux, along with local farmers, ranchers and activists, marched along the North Dakota Highway 1806, Friday, to protest against the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline.
Starting off at Sacred Stones Overflow Camp in Morton County, demonstrators protested against the decision of a federal judge to deny the tribe's request for an temporary injunction to halt work on the pipeline.
Since it was approved in late July, the 1,886-kilometre (1,172 miles) pipeline has sparked outrage among Native American communities and locals. The project is expected to carry crude oil from the North Dakota region, north of the tribe's lands, to southern Illinois when it's completed by the end of the year. Thousands of Native Americans representing tribes from all over the country have traveled to North Dakota to camp in the solidarity with Standing Rock Sioux.
