More than 13,000 refugees remain stranded at the Greek-Macedonian border at Idomeni refugee camp, as Macedonian authorities continue to allow only a fraction of those waiting to pass, Saturday.
The refugee camp is holding seven times its maximum capacity while more refugees arrive at the border from Piraeus Port. Authorities and NGOs fear that viruses may spread amid of the poor living conditions at the camp.
"The Former Yugoslav Republic needs to open immediately the borders and the EU needs to implement civil actions against the countries that are closing borders today whether they are members of the EU or candidate members", said Apostolos Tzitzikostas, Regional Governor of Central Macedonia, who was on visit today at Idomeni refugee camp. "It is a huge humanitarian crisis I have asked the government to declare the area in state of emergency", he added.
According to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) around 35,000 refugees and migrants arriving primarily through Turkey have been trapped in Greece while around 20,000 of them are around Idomeni. Kilkis municipality, where Idomeni belongs, has been declared in emergency state due to the excessive number of refugees.
