Protesters gathered outside the Amygdaleza migrant detention centre in Greece's Attica region, Saturday, calling out the Syriza government on their failed pledge to close the site, 100 days after their election. The overcrowded detention centre was guarded by riot police as the protesters marched on the building's entrance, carrying a banner calling for the freedom of the centre's inmates. The event was organised on World Refugee Day by the 'Deport Racism' group, who maintain that while the Greek government are slowly releasing detainees, medical supplies and conditions in the centre remain poor. A purported 30 migrants are being discharged from the detention centre daily, but there are reports that many are quickly arrested and returned to the centre once released. Refugee advocacy groups also state that many are being held with little to no knowledge of their legal status.
