Lynch Announces Probe of Baltimore Police Department

U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch announced Friday that the Department of Justice has launched an investigation into suspected widespread civil rights abuses in Baltimore by police. At a news conference, Lynch said, "We have watched as Baltimore has struggled with issues that face cities across our country. This approach has been welcomed by the Baltimore City Fraternal Order of Police. If unconstitutional policies or practices are found, we will seek a court-enforceable agreement to address those issues.” The investigation’s launch comes only two days after Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake requested the probe into her city’s police department, leading some experts to worry other mayors will follow suit and request federal probes into their cities’ law enforcement departments.
