Thousands of anti-government protesters took to the streets of Hong Kong on Sunday, defying a police ban. The march was called on by the Civil Human Rights Front (CHRF).
The protesters — wearing masks of cartoons, pop-culture figures, and animals — were filmed carrying flags of the US and banners denouncing China as they made their way through the city.
According to reports, authorities closed public spaces and buildings, and disrupted certain metro lines, as a safety measure.
Since March, Hong Kong has been rocked by demonstrations sparked by a planned, but now-withdrawn extradition bill. The rallies have evolved into a movement with wider grievances against the Hong Kong administration.
