The Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency recovered the bodies of three children after a landslide in the village of Donorati, in the Purworejo region of Java killed dozens of people on Monday.
Search and rescue teams have already recovered the bodies of 34 victims, with the bodies of several children who died in the landslide still believed to be missing. "It is possible that there are still nine people buried under the landslide," stated Lutfi Hasan from the National Search and Rescue Agency.
The heavy rain has caused mud slides across the region, which has reportedly destroyed thousands of homes. Rescue teams and volunteers participated in rescuing operations, searching for the victims and evacuating locals. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency confirmed that at least 26 people are still missing.
Indonesia is regularly hit with floods during its wet season, which lasts around six months. Some environmentalists blame logging and human development for increasing the archipelago nation's vulnerability to flooding.
