11.06.2015
Thank you very much, colleagues, and enjoy the afternoon." The European Parliament voted in favour of a resolution concerning recent revelations of high-level corruption involving FIFA, during the EP plenary session in Strasbourg, Thursday. The draft resolution urges former FIFA President Sepp Blatter, who presented his resignation last week, to step down immediately, as the Parliament members expressed their concerns that he may stay for a further nine months before the appointment of a new president. The adopted resolution also outlines that "all officials involved in financial misconduct should be dismissed and any decisions that are linked to corrupt or criminal activities should be reviewed." Seven senior FIFA officials and executives were arrested in Zurich on May 27 and may face extradition to the US for allegedly having used partnerships with sports marketing executives to gain $150 million (€137 million) in bribes in exchange for their backing of several competitions.
