French President Emmanuel Macron was welcomed by his Italian counterpart Sergio Mattarella in Rome on Wednesday, as the two countries look to reset relations following the formation of a new government.
Macron received full military honours at the Quirinal Palace, official residence of the president.
This is the first state visit to Italy since the new coalition between the anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S) and the centre-left Democratic Party (PD) was sworn in on September 5.
The Franco-Italian partnership had been rocky in recent years. Populist deputies in the M5S and former coalition partners the League clashed regularly with Paris over migration and the yellow vests, prompting Macron to briefly recall his ambassador to Rome.
