Police deployed water cannons and tear gas against Buddhist monks staging a protest to demand the release of the Secretary General of Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) in Colombo on Monday.
Monks had gathered at the gates of Presidential Secretariat offices staging protest condemning the imprisonment of BBS leader Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thera and demanding an audience with Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena to hand over a written message to him.
The monks were reportedly allowed into the President's offices afterwards where they handed a written request to release their leader to the President.
Sirisena later issued an apology to the monks, calling for an investigation into the incident.
Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thera had been reportedly condemned to 19 years of jail time over contempt of the court charges.
A Sinhalese Buddhist nationalism, BBS focuses on a mix of Sinhalese culture, ethnicity and Theravada Buddhism and has allegedly participated in radical activities in Sri Lanka.
