Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov paid his respects to the victims of the Armenian massacre by laying flowers at the Eternal Flame at Tsitsernakaberd's 'Armenian Genocide Memorial Complex' in Yerevan on Friday, ahead of the 101st anniversary of the massacre, which is traditionally commemorated on April 24.
Following the laying of the flowers, Lavrov was taken on a tour through the memorial museum, led by its director Hayk Demoyan. After the tour, Lavrov signed the 'Book of Mourning.'
The anniversary is often a source of controversy between Armenia and Turkey. Last year Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan released a statement demanding Turkish authorities recognise the mass killings as a "genocide." Sargsyan went on to urge the Turkish leadership to take responsibility for the crimes beginning in 1915.
Lavrov arrived in Yerevan on Thursday, to discuss a settlement of the recent conflict in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh with the Armenian leadership. Later on Friday, Russia's top diplomat is scheduled to meet with his Armenian counterpart Eduard Nalbandyan and Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan.
