Gonzalo Higuain missed a penalty and was sent off against his former side Juventus as AC Milan lost 0-2 at the San Siro on Sunday.
Mario Mandzukic's header opened the scoring for Serie A leaders and reigning champions Juventus.
Higuain missed a golden chance to equalize from the spot, seeing Wojciech Szczesny tips his shot onto the post.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored in the 81st minute to put the game beyond doubt. Shortly after Higuain lost control, picking up a first yellow for a foul on Juve defender Medhi Benatia before a second coming for dissent after shouting in the referee's face.
At the post-match press conference, AC Milan boss Genaro Gattuso called on his player to apologise to the referee. "When one goes face to face with the referee, it is necessary to take responsibility," he told journalists.
After losing mid-week in the Champions League to Manchester United, Juve coach Massimo Allegri praised his side's return to winning ways.
"The guys were great this evening," Allegri said. "Removing the mistakes seen in Wednesday's defeat. Not because of the defeat itself, but how it came about. We were a bit stunned because we are a team that had not lost since April."
Juventus extended their unbeaten run, six points clear at the top of the table.
